I'm thinking Girl, Interrupted. Something along the lines of misinterpretation that goes along with the institutionalization craze of the 1960s? Or maybe Freud and his experiments hysteria in women. Even something with PMS? Perhaps genuis and the connections with bipolar disorder or major depression?
I think I might have a quote on a Foucault article. I'll check.

I don't know that I have much to contribute to the historical aspect given my non-background, but I've done a lot of *thinking* about the negative stigmas and connotations that are still associated with mental illness even today. I would be interested in reading your paper :)
