Hello again from Finland,
We are now at the Helsinki airport getting ready to head to Rovaniemi. We had two busy days in Heslinki. We did lots of shopping/browsing both at a mall and at the market with a few side stores thrown in between. Meaghan and I went in to a Louis Vuitton store but didn’t find anything we liked… or could afford.
Upon landing we plan to visit around Rovaniemi and then drive to Salla where we are staying.
We are all a bit tired, between the time change, and the early mornings, and the busy days. It will be good to get a chance to catch up in Salla. We are taking lots of pictures to show everyone! Perhaps we will see the northern lights while we are up there.
Update: We have arrived safely in Salla. The resort is very nice. We are nestled in woods. We have a very weak internet connection. The mosquitos have already found us though i haven't found any bites yet. Tomorrow we will start our adventures here.
I am sitting here on the longest flight of my life. We have about three hours to go. It’s 7 hours and 20 minutes in total. It’s actually not that bad. They are playing movies. They’ve fed us, and they gave us pillows and blankets. Pillows and food aside, we are loosing 6 hours between when we got on the plane, and when we’ll get off. Oh well, I guess our bodies will adjust in time.
Our trip to halifax went well, we boarded our flight and landed in Boston on time. We had a 2.5 hour stopover in Boston, and boarded the flight to Helsinki that i’m on right now.
My biggest disappointment was the fact that I’ve had no wifi at any of the airports so far. Technically Halifax has free wifi but the terminal I was in had a pathetic to non-existant signal. Boston advertised for wifi all over the place but they failed to say that you had to pay for it, and I wasn’t about to start paying for it this early in the trip.
The mystery of the day is… Who was the guy with the four man security detail that was on the tiny Delta flight with us from Halifax to Boston. His security guys had the clear spiral ear pieces and intercoms and all wore suits. Looked a bit like the Secret Service, but I didn’t recognize any of the people that were under their care. The thought that was going through my head was, if you are important enough to have security detail, why are you flying on a tiny cheep charter flight from Halifax to Boston, and not a private jet, or at least a bigger plane? Perhaps they were actually transporting something instead of someone so much. I don’t know.
That’s all the excitement I have so far. The rest of the crew is asleep, or as asleep as you can be crammed on a plane. About three more hours and we’ll be landing, then I’ll get a chance to post this up, I hope!
Update: We are in Helsinki. We have checked into the hotel, and the rest of the crew is napping at present. I just got up from a quick two hour nap. I’m afraid if I nap too much I won’t sleep tonight. Then again, I really hadn’t slept in the 24 hours before that. The joys of international travel! Soon we will get adventuring, I’ll let you know how that goes.
In 48 hours I will be at the airport in Boston. We wait 3 hours, and then board our plane to Helsinki. We arrive in Helsinki at around 8am their time, which is about 2am our time :S. We will then spend 2 days in Helsinki before we fly to the Laplands (the northern part of Finland) where we will stay for 7 days (More specifically Salla). Then we fly back to Helsinki, stay there for 5 days, and fly home. It's bound to be an exciting trip. I'm ready, sort of. There is the usual packing and last minute things to do, but hey, what fun would it be if there wasn't?
Internet connections permitting, I will be posting adventures and updates here at Peas On the Moon. I will have restricted internet in Helsinki, and I'm not sure I'll have any for the week in Salla so posting will be limited. I shall update as often as I can.
Stay tuned!
Actually, today is the first day in a few that the rain is not falling, and it makes me ever so happy, even though i can only experience it through the window of the shoppe.
It's been a busy month. I've made it through. I've been on some great adventures too. All of the house sitting i was doing left me with a car and Mike, myself and either Bailey or Lou have seen some sights.
Bailey greatly enjoyed Fort Amherst.
Lou greatly enjoyed Greenwich.
Mom and I also got out to the cottage for the first time this season.
I know summer has begun when I've made my first trip to the south shore. I have few major adventures planned for the rest of the month, other than to see people, have a summer kick of party, and play with my bowl of fire i bought for the balcony. Next month will be the great Finland adventure. Woot.
Spring Fever anyone? Add March's unsettling affairs to an April that is filled with pet sitting and events to a bit of spring that's finally showing in the air, and i'm just gone.
I'm still scrambling to find a schedule for the many gaps that my grandmother's death has left me and my family with. Sundays are the hardest, those were our visiting days. The rest of the week is full of work and life with a dash of sadness.
April is already set up with two pet sitting stints which means moving out of my place for a bit and living out of a suitcase:S. Throw in work, some meetings, and keeping myself sane with dates with friends and family and it's gonna be full.
Then there is this on and off sunshine mixed with barely 0 degree temperatures. It's making a girl dream of summer.
Concentration is hard. So is staying sane. Especially when i know there are a trillion things i'm supposed to be doing outside of the above...
p.s. the title of this post is not a typo.
Did you know. . .
A foil wrapped chocolate egg left on a sleeping macbook will grow soft and mushy? (Don't worry, no macbooks were harmed in the making of this fact.)
Today is almost like spring. . . until you step outside. I'm ready for spring. I think everyone is. Especially with this most recent cold snap. Alas, i think we have a few more weeks left before it starts to warm up consistently.
It has been a fast winter. Much faster than i thought it would go by. I thought this winter without school would drag by and be stressful. It has not drug by, and i didn't have the stresses i thought i would, i had others instead. Two bouts of sickness (i hate being sick), and the loss of one of my strongest role models, my grandmother, have made for a bit of a rough winter. At least work and home life have stayed fairly consistent. The illness's i got over, nothing major, the rest will have to heal with time. It's odd, i think of all of the happy memories, and right now it hurts when it is supposed to make me feel better. I am not sure that the sad empty feeling will ever completely go away, but i know that with time and by my family banding together we will all heal in time. Until then, it is still fresh, and raw, and it hurts.
In unrelated news:
I know i am paying off my student loan at a brisk pace, but it still feels like i will be paying it forever.... and ever. Damn money monster. I think it makes it worse knowing all of the things i could be doing with the money instead. I guess i can't be too upset though. It did allow to get my degree. If only the ridiculous interest rate didn't make me feel as if i was running in place.
Constant Vigilance must be kept today!
It's Wednesday, so naturally it is supposed to storm. It hasn't hit yet, but they are clearing out the schools in preparation. We shall have to wait and see.
PEIMUG has begun. (PEI Mac Users Group). Its fun, it's informative, it's awesome. If you want to join us, email me.
It seemed like a good idea to post, but i fear that now i have nothing to say. Perhaps the world is ending.
It's delicious.
